"How far do you need to look for teaching resources and is there ever too much variety ?" Hi Fiona, I don't think you have to look very far at all (check out the Finding Resources page) but the variety is wide and endless, I suppose you would have to have a good think about what resources you would like to use and have a look for those specifically and use other tools to 'browse' what others are looking at - delicious, diigo, twitter etc are all great sources of checking out what others are doing.

There are so many great things on here, but I just can't see this one in the lists above. It's a text to movie animation creator that even has an aussie accent. Yeah!

Thanks for letting us know, sounds like a great tool. Remember, if you find something - you can add it into an existing page or create a new one. That's what a wiki is for - so feel free to add stuff on that you find and think others will appreciate.
Linda.

Can one person broadcast to as many people as a major network - using Social Media it looks like the answer is Yes. If you are not aware, Ashton Kutcher (TV and Movie Star) is in a race with CNN to be the first on twitter with a million followers - Ashton has pledged to donate 10,000 mosquito nets to help fight malaria if he wins - he has now promised the nets whether he wins or not.

"Standard Operating Environment/Equipment etc..." No idea but I am sure one of the students may know the answer. A couple of my students are computer whizz kids - they know all sorts of random information. You want me to ask them?

"Have you tried 'Teacher Tube'? They ARE awesome tools. You can easily post your own videos/digital stories on there as well. If you look up 'Dishmoptop' in YouTube you will see some of mine. Some of them are a little 'random' though!" Yes, I have used TeacherTube but so far, I have found that YouTube has a greater variety of videos on the topics that I need for my classes. I also stumbled upon VodPod which is also a video sharing site. Plus, VodPod allows you to put a widget into an Edublogs.org blog - I have it on my class blog and it gives me a thumbnail picture of the videos that I have associated with my blog.

"I've really enjoyed the whole "23 things" program. I've learn't so much by being encouraged to just get in and have a go. The support is excellent. I would encourage others to take it on if it runs again. Is there any other similar things likely to happen next year?" Agrree totally with you alauto. It has been one of the most interesting set of 'things' I have done recently and for a long time. It just keeps spiralling on and on. There isn't enough time for it all, but slowly I learn faster and get a grip on things. New things become recogniseable and familiar, so it doesn't seem that hard the next time. Like underground caving. caverns, tunnels, burrows, dead ends, endless mazes etc..spirals, circuits..circles...endless learning really...thanks to the champs! It's a new world to explore and I've begun using it.

I have always considered myself to be quite 'up there" technology wise but for the last eight years I have been working in Third World countries (that have all been well "connected" to the net) but the technology has certainly developed while I have been away. I certainly haven't been working anywhere that I was able to include YouTube as a teaching resource.
Now that I am back in Australia I have discovered a whole lot new of sites, hints and tips that I can use with my students. In fact, it is information overload - I want to try all of them, all at once.
Gee, it makes me smile when I remember back to my last stint working at Swinburne (1994 - 1999), I taught lots of IT subjects - often with inadequate computers and software. Back then the net wasn't considered to be a necessity but now staff and students would be "up the creek" if we didn't have it.

Yes well that opinion was quite close to 'home' recently!! Sometimes people even in IT 'don't know what they don't know'...... but we have enlightened them! I spent the last 2 days at another TAFE (conference) and couldn't believe how slow their internet was compared to ours. I won't ever complain again. YouTube was useless. The poor people giving presentations were just about giving up and it was an e-learning conference:(

When I first went to sessions regarding online learning with Lilian and Greg, one of the most valuable tips I learnt was to have a discussion thread set up for non-topic subjects. This gives online students the opportunity to "chat" without having to post an official message. I remember Lilian had something called a Coffee Shop or similar. For my post-grad students, I create a Martini Bar, and tell them to treat it like the place where you have drinks at the end of the week (or end of the day!), so that they can exchange gossip, tell jokes, and generally just be friends with each other. It works well, but some groups need a bit of encouragement to start, so I post a funny picture or joke to get the ball rolling. One that always starts a discussion is a photo of the Mircrosoft gang from the 80s. I also ask the question who is the famous person from this photo? Sometimes groups guess very quickly, but other times you get some very funny responses. They are often mistaken as Charles Manson's group.

Corriefan - an excellent suggestion - this could be useful on the Discussions page, located under Blackboard LMS - this area is set up to get teachers to share ways that they use Blackboard successfully in their teaching and I think this is a great example - so feel free to add in to the page. It's a shame we can't have virtual martini's as well, hopefully in a few years!!

http://www.articulate.com/rapid-elearning/ " Another entry in this blog is about Building Your Next E-Learning Scenario and discusses using problem based learning or scenarios within your e-learning course - "One of the dilemmas we face when we create elearning courses is that those taking the course aren’t always compelled by an immediate need to learn like I was with my wife’s laptop. They’re usually taking the course because it’s compulsory–either their employer requires it, they need some sort of certification, or it’s part of an educational program. This doesn’t mean the course is useless or irrelevant. It just means that the reason for taking it might not be to meet an immediate learning need. And because of that, it becomes more challenging to help people learn from the information the course presents" http://www.articulate.com/rapid-elearning/heres-how-to-build-your-next-e-learning-scenario/

This is an interesting Podcast - also have a look at the comments on the Podcast as well - what do you think. http://www.onlineteachingandlearning.com/blog/assessing-the-online-learner/6#comments
In this podcast, authors Rena Palloff and Keith Pratt talk with Jonathan Finkelstein about assessing learners in online courses, and offer practical ideas for measuring learner progress and gauging understanding online. They also describe the role that “social presence” plays in learner success and retention in online programs of study.

I wrote a post about this on my blog today. Just thought it was relevant to TAFE. So many people think they are writing better material if it is full of complicated words! Do you think we are 'dumbing down' the language or is it something we ought to take on board?
